Dochula Pass In Thimphu
Dochula Pass is situated between Thimphu and Punakha and En Route to Punakha, at an altitude of 3,150 meters. From this Pass you will see the beautiful Himalayan Mountain Range with the Tibetan Plateau on a clear day and see the highest mountain peak of Bhutan the “Gangkhar Phuensum”.
A few decades ago, the Dochula Pass was a very misty and densely forested mountain pass. Then Her Royal Highness the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck simultaneously built the 108 beautiful stupas and named them “Druk Wangyal Chortens”, and named the Temple “Druk Wangyal Lhakhang “.
These monuments were built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother after the then King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck returned safely after successfully flushing out the Militants from the Bhutanese soil.
Presently the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (Temple) holds a very large SUPER sized butter lamp made purely of gold and is one of the highlights in this temple. This butter lamp is called the “Eternal Flame of Gratitude” and has been lit at the Dochula Temple to commemorate the 60th Birth Anniversary of the 4th King of Bhutan. This lamp will be burning on till eternity.
The Dochula Pass grounds now has many beautiful man made caves that are set up in natural surroundings which can be used for meditation, prayers and picnic.
There are 2 to 3 Cafes where you could have tea and snacks or even a whole meal.
Annually there is the Druk Wangyal Festival which is held in December in the grounds below the main temple. This festival is graced by the entire Royal Family of Bhutan and the Public too despite it being freezing cold in December at such an altitude.
